Mend March 2025 Day 27: Hand

For today’s theme I have a store bought hoodie that needs a fix. What has it got to do with hands? Well, the hand pockets are super shallow and things fall out from them. I decided to put a fastener on the pockets…but what kind? I considered Velcro, but my experience with it on another jacket made me reconsider it as a pocket fastener. When it gathers too much lint, it stop sticking properly. Instead I decided to use snaps, vintage snaps at that. Snaps from my Mom’s sewing collection:

That price!

I began by marking the centers of both pockets:

My plan was to have 3 snaps on each side to keep the contents of the pocket secure. Marking the placement for the 3rd snaps:

And the finished pockets:

This jacket was $13 in Walmart. I bought it last month for yard work and running errands. I liked the fresh Spring color and was amazed by the low price. I was in a hurry when I bought it and just tried it on right off the rack. I discovered post purchase that it was cheap for a reason, so the low price started to make more sense. They had to cut corners somewhere, and that was by making shallow hand pockets. I couldn’t fix that problem but I could fix the problem of lost possessions that it can cause. Now my things won’t hit the ground anymore, and I can easily lock/unlock the snaps with my hands 🙂
