The Monday Mend: Mending Blemished Fabric

Hello and welcome to this week’s Monday Mend. Today’s mend focuses on mending fabric that isn’t torn, but is instead blemished or stained in some way.

This basic knit tee shirt has been sitting unworn for quite awhile, because it has two bleach spots that make it unsightly to wear.

Here’s how the shirt looked, pre-mend:

An extreme close up

I often mend with 2 strands threaded through the needle together, and I chose to do that with this mend. I used 1 basic color matching thread and 1 decorative tinsel thread for some color pop and shine:

I chose to use 2 tinsels, since there’s 2 spots to mend (and I liked both tinsels):

Then I decided to mirror mend the 2 blemished spots on the other side for balance:

I used satin stitch for this mend, a departure from my usual mending approach. For mending jobs like holes in fabric I usually do a woven mend with warp and weft threads. For this one extreme case of large holes in the heels of socks, I re-knit the areas of fabric. For this job though, I wanted the mend to be mostly invisible with some colorful glints when it’s noticed.

For the price of some sewing time I got this shirt out of wardrobe limbo and back into my wardrobe circulation. Mending is a part of the sustainable fashion movement of keeping clothes longer and saving money. Mending for the win 🙂

Thanks for stopping by 🙂
