Kwik Sew 3323

I bought this pattern back in 2015, when there was an online sale of OOP patterns from the “big 4”. It was vintage then, and even more so now. Kwik Sew patterns have been discontinued since 2021, so this pattern is officially collectable. I liked the idea of homemade slippers: a way to get creative with leftover fabric scraps and save money on not having to buy them from the store.

The pattern is sized for children, women and men, which is really nice. The idea was definitely for family slipper making. The design is a fully enclosed slipper, not open back, and there’s 2 different styles to choose from: round toe and pointy toe. The sole of the slipper is comprised of 3 parts: non slip fabric, a fabric liner, and a layer of foam. I didn’t have foam, so I substituted cotton batting leftover from quilting. The upper calls for 2 layers of batting. The heel section is elasticized.

All the parts ready for assembly:

I made these for my husband and he liked the pointy toe style. I cut a men’s size small, which is men’s shoe size 8-9. They turned out to be a bit big, that is, a bit loose fitting, so I solved that problem by making a fabric casing to house a piece of elastic the same length as the piece used inside the heel. I placed this casing on the outside of the heel, where it performs the same function as the encased elastic. Basically double elastic, to help rein in the loose fit of the slipper. It worked, and the fit was improved. If I make another pair for him I’ll probably cut a smaller size and see how that fits.

The turning of the slipper right side out was tough because of the thick layers. I had to use a pair of pliers, The pattern doesn’t leave enough turn space, it indicates to sew too far down to the end. On the 2nd shoe I stopped stitching higher up on the seam to leave more turning room. It was still difficult but slightly easier. .

For some extra fun we added a couple of bells to the outside elastic belt of each slipper.

Here’s how they look:

He really likes his new slippers!
