Here’s a thing I made, because our room really needed one. The pattern is free, and it’s from the Yarnspirations website, which is the new home of Red Heart Yarn. I liked the pattern the minute I saw it. The bobbles really caught my eye! Also, I hadn’t crocheted in ages, so this seemed like a great way to get back to that and make a useful item at the same time.
Remember this post, where I reclaimed the yarn from a crocheted top I no longer wore? Well, I used that yarn to make this draft stopper. It’s a basic worsted weight acrylic yarn, which is what this pattern calls for.
I had a blast crocheting this! I learned how to make bobbles in crochet, and the pattern was just right for me in terms of difficulty. I memorized the repeat after awhile, and was able to complete it without reading the pattern.
Construction Notes
The pattern consists of a crocheted outer shell and a filled inner tube. I sewed the inner tube from some mid weight spare cotton fabric I had. The recommended fill is clean sand, but it also says that you can use fiber fill. The sand we have here is in bags and is very dusty, so I opted for the fiber fill, which I have plenty of from quilt making. I made roll ups of the quilt batting until the tube was filled, and then sewed it shut. I did make sure to secure them by tying them with yarn. This way they’ll stay in place and not move when the dodger gets put in the washer.
After that the crocheted outer shell is attached. I used the same yarn to sew it closed onto the inner tube, using a mattress type stitch. The ends are gathered using a running stitch, as per the instructions.

I really think this would make a nice scarf pattern too!

This looks much better and is more functional than using towels to block the draft. It was a great way to use up spare yarn and materials that I had, while upgrading my crochet skills at the same time.
Take care and thanks for reading 🙂
