Yarn Dyeing My Handspun

This is my first foray into dyeing my own handspun yarn. As I explained in an earlier post, I didn’t dye the roving because there was so much of it. Instead I decided that I’d dye the yarn itself as I spun it up, and when I wanted to.

Here’s the results of my 2 skeins, first shown here. I used Wilton’s dyes on these. The approach I took was hand painting/speckled. The larger skein was quite a success until I forgot to heat set it before rinsing. Although it was a pretty upsetting moment, I worked quickly to remedy the situation by just remixing some dyes, repainting the yarn and finally heat setting it. It dyed up paler than I’d wanted it to, but I’m happy with it nonetheless. I’m new to yarn dyeing, and I’m still learning, so there’s a lot of trial and error involved.

The second skein is also my second try, and I gained maybe a degree more control over the process in dyeing that one. Here’s the pics:

I’m saving these for some selfish knitting – more on that in a future post!

Take care and thanks for reading 🙂
