Year End Hand Spun Adventures

This is my first attempt at spinning fingering weight yarn. To ensure my happiness and success, I specifically bought fiber of the build and prep for spinning this kind of yarn. A blend of Superwash Merino and Nylon, just like the yarn we buy when we think of knitting socks.

I dyed the fiber myself. I wanted to mix the purple with another color, but then realized it was in a class by itself. I instead made a yarn just of purple and it’s nuanced shades, and called the colorway “Study in Purple”.

I’ve never spun so fine a single before, and quite honestly, I think the addition of nylon in the mix made it easier and a pleasure. I’m convinced that it adds strength to the fiber, just from having the experience of spinning it. The reason why I’m saying this is because there’s a lot of criticism about man made fibers, and how they’re bad for the environment. I think that in small amounts they’re helpful and extend the wearable life of natural fibers.

I spun 2 skeins: 1 is 320 yds and the other 210. I’d describe the weight as a mix between sport and fingering. I actually needed to spin the singles even finer in some places! Here’s how they look:

The 320 yd. skein
Another of the 320 yarder
The 210 yard skein

I’ve been working on many projects and I have more blog posts to write (hopefully before the year is out).

Take care and thanks for reading 🙂
