In Celebration of Wool

Happy New Year!  I hope that your holidays were happy and restful!

I had a good time over my holiday,  thanks to a special gift that I treated myself to: a blending board. My spinning wheel had been sitting idle for some time due to a lack of fiber to spin with.  I follow Paradise Fibers on Instagram, and after watching several of their blending board videos, I was smitten.  It just looked like so much fun,  I had to get one!  Naturally, I also bought some fiber, a mix of undyed wool and silk.

I spent much of Christmas dyeing my new roving with Kool Aid and food coloring (oh, and drinking shots of Dr. McGillicuddy’s).  I didn’t want to deal with non food safe chemicals,  I just wanted to have fun.   And I did!

After the roving dried,  I had a blast learning how to use my new board.  As with most everything in life, practice makes perfect, and there was plenty of roving to practice with!  I rolled the first rolag too tight, which made for difficulty spinning,  so I learned and adjusted from there.  The board soon became my friend,  an awesome canvas upon which I can paint with colored wool.  I find the process to be really meditative, I’m so glad I bought it.  No regrets!

I’ve been marveling at how beautiful rolags look, and I took a lot of pictures of the ones I made.

Here’s my work so far:

I’m looking forward to seeing how these spin up, and hoping I’ll have enough to make something with.

Thanks for reading 🙂
